Five Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solutions for Stain Removal

Author: David Belliveau

Many different substances will end up spilling on the carpet from time to time. And the first thing to do whenever a spill happens to occur is to clean it up. However, never ever wipe the floor back and forth in order to clean a spill because that will just cause the substances to settle into the fibers in the carpet- which will defeat the purpose.

Another thing to keep in mind when cleaning up spills is to always use a light colored towel or rag otherwise the dye from colored rags or towels will seep through which will ruin the carpet even more!! And because all spills are different based on the type of substance whether it is wine, blood, juice, soup or urine from the pet- one type of cleaning solution that works for one spill will not necessarily work on the other. So let’s take a look at five different homemade carpet cleaning solutions that can be used to clean up accidents from various sources:

1. Hot Water and Vinegar

This solution actually works great on all kinds of dirt and stains because of the fact it is incredibly acidic, not to mention it removes awful smells. Vinegar itself can be used to help with stain removal or you can add it to boiling water. Due to the fact that the acidic levels are high, you will want to test it on a wet floor covering before using it on the carpet. If there is damage of any kind from the test, then you may either not use it or use a little vinegar to add to boiling water.

2. Borax Powder and Baking Soda

This solution works great for very tough stains. Borax removes the stains and the baking soda removes the bad odors. In order to add a more powerful freshener to this solution, be sure to mix the borax powder and baking soda together, and add in 1 tablespoon of dried herbs as well as a few drops of essential oil and it will really help freshen up your carpet.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide and Lemon Juice

This solution is perfect for removing the tougher stains like blood, wine or grease because it is so powerful. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleach and adding lemon juice it will intensify the power of the carpet cleaning solution. This will certainly help remove those spots that have been hard to remove in the past.

4. Essential Oil, Salt, and White Vinegar

This particular solution is highly effective in removing pet stains, as well as wine spills. In fact, the salt in this solution is what helps remove stains from wine and dark colored stains such as blood.

5. Baking Soda and Cornstarch

This solution is powerful when it comes to removing oily stains because the cornstarch absorbs it. And the baking soda removes bad odors. But you will want to apply this solution on the stain as soon as it happens, and then it will absorb it and then you vacuum it all up. Repeat if the stain is still there after doing this the first time.

Now you know of some carpet cleaning solutions that will remove stains, instead of just relying on taking a rag and blotting it up. These homemade methods will ensure that spills are removed, and left-over staining does not occur.
