Three Tips On Keeping Your Carpets Clean

Author: David Belliveau

You already know that carpet is expensive, and you will want to do everything you can to prolong the life of it – and hiring a professional carpet cleaning company is absolutely required to have done at least once a year. Or you can have it cleaned every two years if you take the best care of your carpets for the rest of the time.

What many people fail to understand is that vacuuming alone will not thoroughly clean carpeting. It is not possible for even the most powerful vacuum cleaner to effectively extract dirt from the floor. This is why you have to hire a professional cleaner at least once a year. However, there are tips that you can take advantage of so you can effectively clean your carpet, and hire a professional cleaner a little less often.

Adopt a ‘No Shoes’ Rule

Even though dirt and debris from outdoors will fly into your home and office, and settle into the carpet fibers- if you don’t allow anyone to walk on your carpets with their shoes on, that will help keep your floors cleaner. Make a rule for guests and your family to take their shoes off as soon as they enter your home. You can even offer clients slippers at your office so they can take their shoes off as soon as they come in as well. They will certainly understand.

Sprinkle Baking Soda On Carpets Before Vacuuming

Baking soda will not help extract dirt and debris from your carpet fibers, but what it will do is absorb odors. Therefore, each time before you vacuum, put some baking soda on the carpet and it will leave your floors smelling fresh for the time being. Vacuuming is important because it helps remove surface dirt before it settles into your flooring, and should be done for no less than once a week.

Treat Stains As Soon As They Happen

As soon as any kind of stains happens whether your dog urinates on the floor, or your kid pukes, or you spill some juice by accident- treat it right away. This way, the spillage has less of an opportunity to set in. Use a white towel to blot substances so that no dye from the towel also settles into the carpet fibers. And you will want to create a mixture of warm water and vinegar or warm water and baking soda to take another light colored rag and blot the area again even after it’s been cleaned. This way you will clean the area even further. Never forcefully wipe stains because that will only cause it to settle into your fibers. This is why every stain needs to be blotted up instead of wiped back and forth.

By taking these measures, you will never be able to keep your carpets completely cleaned to the point of not needing a professional steam cleaner to extract dirt and grime. However, if you utilize these tips, you can keep your floors relatively clean for a long time.
